How do labels, WHY do labels start up in the first place?
Is it the money, the girls, the name in lights?
We can’t speak for the majors, they’re in a world of their own. But when it comes down to the independents, its front line stuff. Ears to the ground, the word on the street, the shock of the new, always searching for that music kick, the shot, the adrenalin hit. Is it the lyric, the tension or the flow? Do you need the chill or is it the menacing rhythm that makes you want more?
There’s been a lot of listening hours clocked up by those nice Crunch people over the years. Does that make it so that we’ve heard it all? We hope not. If we say “We’ve heard it all before” shoot us. What it does is make it so that want to hear more… and more.
We already have one label; Document Records. You can check it out www.document-records.com It’s big. Over 900 titles. The label’s fifteen years old at the time of writing. In many ways it holds some of the gems that formed the bed rock of rock and roll. They’re all there; Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Son House, Johnny Shines, Sonny Boy Williamson, Lead Belly and hundreds more.
But a real love of music can be far reaching and make a man or woman do strange things and to prove it we set up Crunch. One can only be given demos for so long before a few get through. Get into your head, into your conscience and stays there in your memory, going round and round until you crack and say this is f@*!#=% brilliant and I can’t sit here and do nothing about it.
That’s why independent labels start up; belief, passion, to hear something and have an insane desire to shout out loud “Everybody STOP! Listen to this!”, to share the experience. There’s a lot of brilliant music out there. Musicians, bands, up and down the land that could knock the socks of bigger names with lesser talent, if only they could be given the chance. Like any record company, big or small, we can only do so much. But we have been very fortunate to be able to put our name to some fine artists who have proved to us that we certainly haven’t heard it all before. Long may that process continue.
So, what about us? Crunch is a U.K. independent record label with world wide distribution that has set out to present some of the most exciting bands and artists around. ‘Nough said, now it’s down to the listening.
